Meredith
Just finished a painting which I’ve entitled “Meredith.” I used a Flickr photo by R@punseLL for reference, then painted the rest from my head (her hair, the background).
About fifteen minutes into the painting, when I was still laying down broad areas of color, I looked at what I had and almost gave up. It looked depressingly bad. But I forged onward, and by the end of the evening I’d gotten to this point:

I’m not entirely sure why I decided to swap her hair out, other than that I wanted to see if I could paint convincing hair from scratch. Almost. :P Hair’s a lot of fun, though.
Getting eyes to look right is rather hard, I’ve found. But I’ll keep working at it.
I cycled through a few different ideas for the background (a sunset, a castle, etc.) before settling on this. The wall behind her turned out better than I expected, considering that I didn’t have any references to work with.
Anyway, I’ve still got a long way to go, yes, but I do think I’m getting better. And that’s all I can really ask for. :)

Ben-jam-in, good work on the digital painting. I really like her eyes and smile in the roughed out version, and the wall on the other. The white streaks in her hair on the first version may be a little too contrasty, but it’s a thought in the right direction. Keep up the good work.
[…] Another cross-posting from BenjaminCrowder.com, mainly because I’ve spent the last hour writing a story and all my writing energy is depleted. :) Here’s a digital painting I finished this morning after four or five hours of labor: […]
